STEM Lab Construction Beginning This Summer

Saint Brigid of Kildare is excited to announce the beginning of phase two of our 21st century learning plan — the creation of a new STEM lab and learning research center.
Thanks to a gracious anonymous donor, St. Brigid will begin construction on June 3, 2015, with the goal of completing the work by the start of school on August 26, 2015.

Above is an architectural drawing of the final plan. The Think Tank area will remain the same, but the computer and science rooms will be combined to form a STEM lab, and the library will be split into a technology lab and media center by a glass wall.

Library → Technology Lab

The library will be transformed into a technology lab and research center, where students can interact in small groups and collaborate on wireless devices. The current layout will be split in two parts, separated by a glass wall. The left (or south) side will house books and book lending, along with reconfigurable student work and reading stations. On the right (or north) side of the glass wall will be the technology lab, complete with countertop ledges and workstation tables for flexible laptop and tablet usage. There will be smart TVs used to replace smartboard technology, which will allow for wireless presentations from any of the devices in the room.

The new library furniture will function as book storage on one side with seating on the opposite side. The furniture can be curved to create a divider or shaped as a half circle for small groups.

Science and Computer Room → STEM Learning Lab

The second part of the project entails combining the current science lab and computer lab (with the existing wall being removed) to create one large STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) learning lab. This will allow more room for science labs and projects, and more flexible work spaces. There will be portable dry-lab stations and wet-lab stations along the wall, as well as repositionable chairs to allow for traditional seating or the ease of instant break out into collaborative work groups. The STEM lab will house smart TV monitors on the walls for interactive presentations which can be seen all around the lab, or to show different media for small group work. There will also be a green screen where students can work on creating and editing videos and a 3D printer for student engineering projects.

The seating in the STEM lab will accommodate small groups or can be broken into individual seating. The desks will double as storage space for STEM learning materials.
Tour the New Spaces

These new learning spaces and furniture will allow for the continued advancement of our 21st century learning environment where students are able to think critically, communicate in new ways, collaborate with others, and use creativity and innovation in thinking and problem solving. Saint Brigid of Kildare School is very fortunate and grateful to have donors that support this mission of advancement within Catholic education. We will have a formal dedication ceremony upon the project completion in the fall where parents may tour the new spaces and learn more about the new educational opportunities available because of this wonderful gift given to our parish school.
